Scottish vote: 'No' on course for comfortable victory
FXStreet (Bali) - After weeks of uncertainty, the Scottish Unionist appears to be well on track to claim victory, in a historical day for the norther UK country, which saw the highest turnout in an election since universal suffrage in the 1950 general election.
The victory, being now confirmed by some news channels like Sky news, should assure Scotland's political and economic future to financial markets, while FX traders are likely to return joining the bids in the Pound, with the smart money to re-focus ion n BoE rate hike expectations. So far, the substantial lead in favour of the 'No' has assisted on lifting confidence among British Pound buyers, with the rate around $1.65.
With over 3/4 of the 32 local authority areas having declared, with the Yes only in a few regions – Dundee, West Dunbarstonshire, Glasgow, ... -, it appears safe to assume Scotland will continue being part of the United Kingdom. Even Sky News are saying that while not official, they are calling the overall result a 'No' victory.
The results have so far been in line with an early statement from YouGov’s President Peter Kellner, who declared he was “99% certain” of a 'No' win following the results of the latest poll.
Clackmannanshire was the first council to publish the votes count, with the No obtaining 19,036 vs 16,350 Yes, translating into a 53.8 % of rejection to independence. The area was expected to receive greater 'Yes' support. Orkney was the next region to reveal the votes count, with the No coming strong at 67.2% vs yes at 32.8%, after No gathered 10,004 and Yes 4,883. The result was hardly a surprise, as Orkney was always seen as a No campaign strong-hold.
Shetland, another 'No' strong-hold, saw No collecting 9,951 votes (63.7%) vs Yes 5,669 (36.3%). Eilean Siar council registered No 53.42 vs Yes 46.58%. Another victory for the 'No' campaign, with the country on track to see the 'No' claim victory by a larger margin than pollsters previously expected.
Then came Inverclyde, with a very narrow victory also for the No, collecting 27,329 votes (50.08%) vs Yes 27,243 (49.92%). There were also good news for the 'No' supporters out of Midlothian, East Lothian, Falkirk, Angus, Dumfries & Galloway, East Ren, East Renfrewshire, Aberdeen City and East Dumbartonshire, all voting for 'No' on the referendum. West Dunbartonshire voted Yes, followed by Glasgow and North Lanarkshire votes.
